Chemical Peels

We recommend to get a deep pore facial at least 2 weeks before any peeling procedure

Overview:

As we age, the sun and other environmental factors can take a toll on our skin, leaving it dull and feeling damaged. Over time, these weakened skin cells can cause wrinkles and discolorations to develop, which can make us appear older than we truly are. Fortunately, the chemical peels are effective at treating fine lines, wrinkles, sun spots, acne, and other skin conditions to reveal healthy, glowing, rejuvenated skin. I offer a variety of non-invasive chemical peels, including the modified Jessner's and glycolic acid chemical peels, which can be customized to meet the individual needs and goals of each patient.

Glycolic Chemical Peels

One of the lightest chemical peels offered, Glycolic acid chemical peels provide mild, yet effective treatment for acne, fine wrinkles, dry skin, and skin discolorations. Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid derived from fruit that exfoliates oily skin, revealing the smooth, healthy skin underneath. These gentle chemical peels also unclog pores as well as promote skin cell regeneration with little-to-no irritation. Multiple treatments may be needed for optimal results.

Modified Jessner's Chemical Peels (Rejuve-peel)

For individuals who desire a deeper treatment than glycolic acid chemical peels, we offer modified Jessner's chemical peels. Jessner's chemical peels are made of a combination of resorcinol, lactic acid, and salicylic acid that work to improve the appearance of acne-prone, sun-damaged, or hyperpigmented skin. Jessner's chemical peels penetrate deeper into the epidermis than glycolic acid chemical peels, but remain gentle, even on sensitive skin. The result is smoother, more even skin texture and tone.

As a skin care professionals will evaluate your skin and custom-tailor a chemical peel to fit with your unique beauty needs and goals. I am  dedicated to helping your skin look and feel better.

Important Guidelines for Post-Peel Home Care

Aerobic exercise or vigorous physical activity should be avoided for the first 48 hours.

Direct sunlight exposure is to be completely avoided immediately following the treatment (including any strong UV light exposure and tanning beds). If some sun exposure cannot be avoided, first apply Daily Replenishing SPF30+ as your skin will become more sensitive to the sun as a result of this treatment.

On the day after the peel, cleanse your face with Chamomile or Lavender Cleanser.

Gently moisturize your face using Soothing Skin Relief Gel and Vita Soothe mixed together a minimum of 3 times a day. You may also spritz as often as you like with Vita-C Peptide Spray. Always apply Daily Replenishing SPF30+ if going outdoors.

Do NOT apply any type of AHA/BHA or exfoliation products as this can damage or irritate the skin during the entire healing process. Do not have any procedures, including waxing, laser hair removal, and hair coloring or straightening for at least ten days following the peel. Allow 7-10 days for healing.

Expect slight redness or flakiness for the first few days. By Day 3 or 4 you may see crusts forming and the skin starting to peel.

DO NOT peel, rub, or scratch your skin at any time, whatsoever. This WILL cause damage and compromise your results as well as possibly cause scarring or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

If you experience painful areas of the face, contact your skin care therapist immediately. In the event that you may have additional questions or concerns regarding your treatment or suggested home product/post-treatment care, you must consult your therapist immediately

Management of Possible Adverse Skin Reactions to Peels

the following recommendations are very broad, each skin condition is different and need to be treated as such. Please contact your skin care specialist to arrange a check-up appointment.

  • Immediate Marked Redness Upon Application (Within 1 – 2 Minutes)
Cause: The patient may have been getting a lot of sun, or using Retin-A or another at home AHA prior to the peel, so that the Glycolic penetrated quicker and better than expected. Or, in the case of a very fair-skinned patient, he/she may have more sensitive skin.

Solution: Immediately apply tepid water with a cotton pad, then rinse. Then apply very cool water compresses to patient. Lastly, vitasoothe to entire face.
  • Dry Patches
Cause: The patient may be applying too much of the at-home Glycolic products.
Solution
: Review with the patient the small amount of Glycolic that is to be applied at home. Ask the patient to always apply the product in front of well-lit mirror (magnified, if necessary).

Never: apply the at-home Glycolic to dry, red or irritated skin. Remember, certain areas of thinner skin, such as the Malar eminence and perioral areas, may flake even though the rest of the skin does not. If the patient is using Retin-A, ask them to discontinue until the

scaling subsides. Also, apply one of our moisturizers in the morning and night.

  • New Rash, Especially near Hairline

Cause:   The patient may be experiencing a contact dermatitis to a hair product, particularly if he/she just colored his/her hair. This happens rarely, but is due to the increased penetration of the possible irritant after the patient has been on Glycolic Therapy for a few weeks and has thus lost some of the skin’s barrier effect.

Solution:   Ask the patient to begin applying Hydrocortisone lotion daily to the affected area, and stop using Glycolic on the area until the rash is healed. Before the next coloring appointment, patient may stop use of at-home Glycolic for 1 week.

  • Increased Sensitivity or Redness from Glycolic or Retinol At-Home products

Cause:  Increased penetration of the Glycolic as treatment time progresses, due to progressive stripping of stratum corneum.

Solution:   Decrease the volume of Glycolic used and consider applying only once per day. Never apply the Glycolic to skin that is already irritated.

  • Rough, red or hyper-pigmented patches

Cause:  These usually represent previously mild actinic keratosis or solar lentigos that are resolving.

Solution:  Reassure the patient that this is a normal response in some people. Explain that these spots are being treated and will resolve in several weeks (possibly up to 6 – 8 weeks).

  • Skin Sensitivity

Cause:  Most commonly seen in persons with initially dry skin.

Solution:  Review quantities used by the patient. Ask the patient to discontinue the Glycolic products until this sensitivity subsides. The patient should then begin to use it every night. If no problems are encountered after this time, the patient may use glycolic products as tolerated. The patient’s Washes should be changed every 2 weeks.

  • Slight Exaggeration of some Fine Lines/Wrinkles
Cause:  This may happen during the first several weeks of the program. Remember that dryness makes fine lines more visible and exfoliation can increase this effect to a greater degree in some patients more than others.

Solution: Ask the patient to use the Glycolic products only once daily. Also, he/she should use the  Vitasoothe . Reassure the patient this is not abnormal, and that in fact, after a few weeks, he/she will have new skin cells that will result in a beautiful complexion.

  • Reddening of Spots on Face

Cause: Many solar lentigos turn pinkish-red color prior to fading, particularly during Hydroquinone or any skin whitening therapy (including our C stem whitening formula) .

Solution: Reassure the patient that you feel this indicated the dark spots are starting to resolve. If the patient is disturbed by these (if they are not concealed with make-up), reduce to once at bedtime for the Hydroquinone and add Hydrocortisone. Alternatively, in the case of a truly alarmed patient, discontinue Hydroquinone and begin using Hydrocortisone
